ENTRY #7. HASHTAGS

Now a days when you first hear the word Pound, You tend to think "what the hell does that mean?". Well, because social media takes a huge role in our life, All we ever known the pound for was "hashtag" or at-least for the past 10 years. You see, it became more easier once social communications came along and made everything off the phones. Instead of newspaper, Hashtags were more popular to use and interact with, but why? The "hash" symbol carried a lot of power in the way it represented something and getting to it quick. A hashtag goes viral on the internet and in seconds you can see what's going on because the hashtag says it. For example, when you want to look up a certain subject online, all you have to do is hashtag the subject and it will come up instantly. Hashtags are very known to be the quickest link to any subject you're interested on.

I happen to have a lot of experience with hashtags because of Twitter. Twitter is the king of hashtags! I googled how many times hashtags appear on Twitter and it is exactly 125 MILLION hashtags a day! For me, if I use a hashtag, I look up things ONLY if its something that is going viral on the internet. I knew this friend that got popular on Instagram because of hashtags. She posted a photo and put about 15 hashtags of whatever was going on with the photo and I guess people linked up to the photo because it was what they were looking for or liked it? I don't know, it was weird but just know that happens...

I know hashtags HAVE to have some cultural significance in the way it changed how we communicate. The hashtag has the ability to unite the internet around moments of real life activism.
