ENTRY #9. The power of media.

Hello guys! Welcome back, I just want to briefly tell you guys a story about an experience I had with media not to long ago.

Over the past few days I have been trying to come up with an argumentative topic for my English 102 paper. I had came across a bunch of issues due to the power of media, but I want to call out one specific one that bothers me.

It came to be a Monday Afternoon and I had been Picked up for work by my aunt Erika who I work with and on our way to work, this was me on the passenger side turning over to see her face sucked in her phone, one hand was on the steering wheel because the other hand was holding her phone! I was looking at her like...

I gasped and told her exactly what that meme above said " Fuck my life right?" Meaning she doesn't care about being on her phone while driving especially with me on the passenger seat. I then thought about how the power of media can literally kill you!

If the media strongly took away the attention of my aunt, imagine all those who do the same thing. Driving without a seat belt is one thing but to be on the phone scrolling through Facebook while driving is definitely something bigger than not knowing what is on the line while doing it.

I did a little study on how long my aunt constantly is on her phone, and I mean I took advantage of that because I work with her, so the more I got to see her.  turns out she is on it every 15 minutes straight. that is when people are around and talking to her, she still has her phone right in front of her. When she is not around people, she is on it for about an hour and a half, that is with nobody talking to her. I also did try talking to her while she was on it, she complete ignored me, not that she didn't want to reply, she just blocked everything out and scrolled down her phone.

It was unbelievable what I had witness that I actually paid more attention to how much I use my phone. I was close enough to my aunts hours of using phones but not so much where I forget that I am driving or talking to someone physically. I hope I never get to that point so I actually started turning off my phone more. It was an eye-opener to see how much power the media has and how fast its taking over us.

  1. WOW! First of all the meme made me laugh and upset all at the same time. It is true though, the media can literally kill us. Now I will say that I am guilty of shooting a text here or there while driving, but I try to be concious of it (mainly because my boyfriend would kill me if he found out I was texting and driving). It is interesting that your aunt was on her phone so much all the time, but unfortunately not surprising, not this day in age. I too try to be concious of my usage, especially when physically around other people. If we can't even be in the presence of others physically and be attentive, then we have no hope for raising children, that are capable of being in the moment.
